Hockey PEI Adopts Rule Modifications for 2015-2016 Season
2015-11-03
Hockey PEI has recently announced the adoption of rule modifications for the 2015-2016 season which are effective immediately. As a result of concerns around safety and respect in non-checking leagues,
“We have heard several concerns in recent years from our members about the safety and respect of play within some of our non-checking leagues” stated Hockey PEI President Barry Thompson.
“These leagues have developed an expectation from players that they can play the game without being body checked and if they are not prepared or expecting a body check it puts players in a vulnerable and unsafe position”.
Modifications to the playing rules will include the addition of a 10 minute misconduct to a body checking penalty and the double minor penalty for Checking to the Head. The changes are applicable to all non-checking leagues at the Pee Wee level and above.

These changes came as a result of recommendations provided by a safety committee which was comprised of minor hockey association presidents, members of minor council and a representative of the officials council.
The committee’s recommendations were endorsed by minor council, the minor hockey associations and passed by the Hockey PEI Board of Directors.
“The focus now is now on educating players, coaches, officials and parents on these changes to the game. This is about player respect in the game and our main priority, which is player safety”, stated Thompson.
